The trending rave of prebiotic skincare, encompassed in an ancient skincare practice: the use of goat milk in skincare.
Prebiotic skincare. It’s trending right now. Is it more than a trend though? Is it possible that there are types of skincare that are prebiotic skincare that have been used in the past, and were just never called ‘prebiotic’? Let’s find out together! (The reason I say ‘together’ is this: whenever I write a blog, I pick a topic that I want to learn about. Then I put my questions into points for my blog post, study the topic, and finally, write up a blog post with all the fascinating things I’ve just uncovered. All this to say, I didn’t really know what I was talking about before anyone else did.)
To figure this out, we have to first understand what pr
ebiotics are. And to understand what prebiotics are we have to backtrack even farther, and talk a bit about our skin microbiome.
What is the skin microbiome? It is essentially a lot of microorganisms dwelling within the surface of your skin. Things like fungi, bacteria, and viruses make up that microbiome. Don’t worry, the microorganisms mentioned here are good ones, most of them anyway. There is a certain amount of bad bacteria living on our skin too, but in general our skin microbiome is made up of healthy microorganisms. This is where our lovely little prebiotic friends come in! Some of the microorganisms we discussed are what we call probiotics, which is probably a familiar term to you. The prebiotics act as food for these probiotics to keep them alive and healthy.
Now, if you read my last blog you may remember that we talked a little bit about oligosaccharides. These are the most common type of prebiotics. The best part about this is that our favourite ingredient at Never Not Skincare - goat milk - is full of oligosaccharides, which means…., what?
Goat milk skincare is prebiotic skincare! How exciting is that!! Or maybe your wondering what makes that exciting. If so, this next part is for you. (Remember, if I wrote about it, I wondered about it too!)
Why use prebiotic skincare? Like we said before, the prebiotics feed the healthy microorganisms, or proteins on your skin. This helps to keep your skin barrier balanced, glowing, and strong. It also helps to offset factors that create dryness, redness, itching, and irritation. It is said that goat milk has been used in skincare since ancient times. Renowned women like Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt from 51 to 30 BC, and Elizabeth I, Queen of England from 1558 to 1603, bathed in goat milk to attain soft, glowing skin.
So how does all this apply for treating sensitive skin? (For writing purposes, I’ll probably keep saying sensitive skin in this blog post rather than sensitized skin. You can refer to my blog post Goat Milk Skincare for Sensitive Skin to learn the difference.) Having “sensitive skin” basically means that your skin barrier is damaged, or has maybe seen smoother days. (In more ways than one😉) What is your skin barrier? It’s your skin microbiome, that layer of microorganisms, a bunch of which are probiotics. Probiotics encourage the growth of healthy bacteria, and when the probiotics are alive and thriving, they are what gives your skin that balanced healthy glow. They keep the skin barrier healthy, happy, and strong. You get the idea. To keep the probiotics alive and healthy, they need to be fed. (Just like me!🤭😄) And what do we feed them? We feed them prebiotics. Our specialty goat milk skincare to be exact, because it is teaming with our little friends, The Prebiotic Oligosaccharides.
Yup, you should try it too. Goat milk is the gentlest, most caring skincare ingredient ever. If someone has something to say about the anonymous transaction that took place on your account (or someone else’s; never mind, I don’t promote that actually) after you read this blog post, tell them it’s my fault cuz I told you to.
Here are a few of my favourite skincare products that are full of goat milk and other gentle, natural ingredients. They are formulated to heal, strengthen, and support your skin barrier through balancing and nourishing a sensitized skin microbiome.
